Eliminating 'lost clusters'
Solution A description of this resolution:
- The utility program CHKDSK enables the lost clusters to be made available again.
This program can be called up for drives C: and D: rom the CE menu under the menu item ’Options / Service Station / Hard disk maintenance / Make available again unused clusters’.
If lost clusters are discovered by CHKDSK, the inquiry ‘Convert lost chains to files (Y/N)?’ appears and must be answered with ‘N’.
This menu item should be called up regularly, at least every two weeks. Only then can data loss be prevented and a hard disk error recognized early. If the number of lost clusters is greater than 80, proceed as follows:
Format disk, install SES, copy backup.
If the message ‘File crosslinked with another file’ appears, proceed in accordance with the handling instructions in support case ‘Crosslinked files’ (call-up by using this key words).
Special case: Server of crosslinked service stations
Special handling is necessary for the server of crosslinked service stations:
- Temporarily shut down operation at all requester stations.
Run down server with a reset.
Carry out CHKDSK on the server in the MS-DOS operating system:
chkdsk c: /f
chkdsk d: /f Carry out a reset and load C-DOS.
- Service Station
So-called 'lost clusters' (lost/blocked memory areas) result on the hard disk when open files are not closed property.
- Too many 'lost clusters' lead to errors when working with the hard disk.
This can occur when the computer is switched off while operating CE software, or when the 'Ctrl C' key combination is pressed. The operating system is capable of managing a certain numbers of lost clusters. However, above approx. 80 lost clusters, management errors may result in the files on the hard disk. This can cause irreparable software damage, so that the entire hard disk may need to be reformatted.
