Freelance Upgrade
Hi
Freelance Version upgrade from 8.1 to 2016 SP1
1. Does it requires any migration procedures or a straight forward upgrade?
2. Any modifications needs to be done in Engineering and Digivis apart from Controller firmware upgrade?

Hello Mokshith,
all 4 previous contributors are right :-)
When Freelance R&D releases a new version, they test upgrading from the previous major version only. Thus a Freelance 2016 (or 2016SP1) has tested the upgrade from Freelance 2013 only. Direkt upgrade from earlier versions are not tested.
This fact leads to the statement that you need to stepwise upgrade through all the major versions between your version and the target version. That is also the official statement from Freelance Product Management. ABB offers services that can do that for you.
You can try to do the upgrade directly and you might get lucky. It all depends on the functionality you use in your project.
What you might want to consider is, that Freelance 2016 supports 16:9 screens. Free Graphics configured for a 4:3 resolution will still show up completely in Freelance Operations (DigiVis) when using the "Fully Vissible" option, but you might want to make use of the additional space on the screen by re-arranging your graphic objects.
The previously mentioned ABB services can offer you that option too.

in your case 8.1 to F2016 SP1 should not be a problem or need any extra effort, loadd all temp changed values via correct option, take .csv backup. and go for upgrade...
Hope that helps..
The software must be updated over all major versions up to the target version.
V8.1 => V9.x => V2013 => V2016

"Upgrade an existing version to the new version" and following chapters.
Hello Mokshith,
be aware though that the "new Digivis" (Freelance Operations) only supports Windows 7 or 10 which, when coming from v8.1, typically will require new PCs.
Ad 2.: I'd advise checking the release notes (of all versions above 8.1).
Good luck and best regards
Björn
The official and supported way is to upgrade via all main versions inbetween as already stated.
Most of the time it also works to import directly from the old version, but this is generally untested. If you find issues afterwards, support will ask you to repeat the upgrade "the official way". So nothing saved in this case.
If you try, I recommend to at least check the Windows Application eventlog after the import and the check of the project. It is a good idea to do this even for the official way.
Best regards
Jürgen
