Need for restarting primary aspect server after a shutdown.
A customer had a massive power outage. In anticipation of losing power from the UPS system, they shut down the 800xa system gracefully so that it would not be hard crash.
However, after shutting it down they were requested to bring it back up in the Utility department. The Utility department contains the redundant system. The Fermentation department has the primary system, including the primary aspect server which is the licensing server.
When they brought up the redundant system it came up in read only mode and they could not control. It wasn’t until someone ran up to the other department and physically moved the primary aspect server into Utilities and got it on the network that they had control back. Since the system could not see the licensing server (primary aspect) that this was the reason we could not control.
The question: I have been told by several ABB instructors that regardless if you can see the license or not, 800xA will not prevent you from Controlling only Engineering, yet it seems that exactly what happen, without the license we had not ability to control.
Could you elaborate on that policy, or at least confirm if you must have access to the licensing server when bringing up the system from a complete off line state?
which version of 800xA is in question here? are you using 1oo2 or 2oo3 redundancy for Aspect servers. It is designed behavior for 2oo3 configuration to have the last server as read-only, and that too can be made accessabel using one special procedure. There is no such condition for 1oo2. Do you have any affinity set for servers which might have resulted in this?
Missing/invalid license should not make a system read-only. It will not allow you to use control builder so you can't do engineering or such activities.
For more information, please contact your regional supportline. they might be able to help your further on this. report with system log fles if any are available.
Read Only Aspect Server
- Considering 1oo2 or 2oo3 aspect server redundancy, If one server in 1oo2 and two servers in 2oo3 are not in running state then the only running Aspect server will run in Read only mode. In read only mode, no changes to the aspect directory can be made.
Need of Licensing server
- Some applications in 800xA runs on partial grant system and some work on Need License system. So some applications will run fine without License Server but some applications like CBM, Graphic Builder, FF Builder require License Server. Operator actions are not hindered without License server. Engineering activity require license server.
Powering up the system
- It is recommeded to bring up yout Primary Aspect Server first when powering up the system from 800xA.
Neither lack of CLS or running in Aspect Directory Read Only mode should prevent operation of the plant.
I believe there is more to it than what has been described here. Let your regional support center startup and perform an investigation into the incident.
Read only mode prevents aspect directory writes; this will block updates to eg General Properties, but not OPC writes to the controllers; care must be taken while designing the application so that a frozen general property won't cause problems.
Standard faceplates, trends, alarm lists can be used without the license server; but will cause license annoyance popups.
