800xa Batch Finger Print Scanners
Looking to see if anyone has had expierance integrating Finger Print Scanners into 800xa Enviroment for a Pharma application and which scanners where used.
Integration must include logging onto the workstation/workplace enviroment and been able to do the log over double authentication required for batch prompts.
AFAIK, System 800xA does not have any built-in features to allow fingerprints to identify a person/operator.
Microsoft Windows can be eqiupped with 3rd party fingerprint readers that allow you to perform regular Windows Logon authentication based on a fingerprint.
Such authentications can be used inside System 800xA since the Plant Explorer, operator workplace, etc applications uses the currently logged on Windows user account to authenticate against the System 800xA Aspect Directory.
If you manage to login (e.g. using a fingerprint reader) to a Windows session as "CONTOSO\BOB", the operator workplace will allow you to access what that same user have been granted access to inside System 800xA.
The Logover, Re-authentication and Double Re-authentication features currently requires you to manually type the username & password on the keyboard.
You may select to forward a request for future enhancements to your regional ABB sales representative.
Last, fingerprints are not secure (just read about the problems Apple have with its latest iPhone model).
I also remember an article I read years before the iPhone was born. The article described how a Swedish postgraduate student at some college managed to fool all fingerprint readers at some major European computer security event by using some rather simple gel-growing-technique after getting access to a copy of the desired fingerprint (e.g from a can, glass, surface, etc.).
