800xA - Multiple Soft Controllers on the same PC
Does anyone know of any way with 800xA to allow the user to run more than one Soft Controller on the same PC (other than using Virtual Machines)?
We have need to run three Soft Controllers with the 800xA Engineering System Software (800xA Ver. 5.1 FP4 w/ Rev. C) and to the best of my knowledge, unless you are running Virtual Machines on the same PC, that there is no way to do this and thus you would need to physically have three separate PCs connected (One for the Engineering system and the first Soft Controller and then two additional PCs each with a Soft Controller).
As each Soft Controller requires a unique IP address, could this be done if we installed three Network Adapters in the PC, each with a unique address and then associated each Soft Controller with a different NIC?
I was not sure if there were any new work-arounds or if there were any changes to the 800xA software that would permit this to be accomplished?
We have run this past our ABB factory contacts and to the best of their knowledge, this is not currently possible, but you never know, perhaps someone in one of the other divisions or another customer has figured out a way to make this work.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Officially - NO, You can runonly one softcontroller per node and that is what ABB supports.
But, there seems to be a workaround (that I heard but not tried it out myself) where you can start multiple soft controller instances on same node changing system variable "MMS Process number" and then starting the soft controller by double clicking on C:\Program Files (x86)\ABB Industrial I\Conrol IT\Soft Controller 5.1\slcmain.exe.
First set the "MMS Process number" to a number (say "y") now double click the slcmain.exe and the IP address of this softcontroller instance will be xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:y wait until the soft controller starts and repeat the process by changing "MMS Process number" to another number.
Be aware that this is not a supported feature and this doesnt change the licencing, you still need to have as many soft controller licences for as many instances you are running.
Not an expert with system 800xa, but check this thread I think it answers what you are looking for @ http://www402.abbext.com/Launch-SoftControllers-1-PC-q30380.aspx
