800xA 6.0 update question
We have 800xA version 6.0.1 system. Why is it necessary to manually remove software from Domain Controllers before a software update?
From the April 2016 version of the update manual:
Un-Installing of products from Domain Controllers
Un-install the following products from Windows Programs and features in the
following order if it is pre-installed:
1.ABB Diagnostics Collection Tool Plugins
2.ABB Diagnostics Collection Tool
3.ABB 800xA RNRP
4.ABB 800xA Common Install
Is this necessary just to install a rollup?
I'm unable to verify with R&D at the moment.
However, if the update manual has this instruction I believe its for a good reason.
The automated installation system in System 800xA version 6 is still under development. Currently it is unable to remove something it has once installed or deployed - in other words, it is lacking a "reverse gear".
I believe the components listed for manual removal are to be replaced by new versions contained in the update and that the old versions must be removed before the new versions can be installed.
Some components can be upgraded "over" an old version, while others require removal of the old version prior upgrade can take place.
The upcoming 6.0.3 update will bring improvements in the area, but the "reverse gear" is still not implemented. Hence, we recommend keeping drive image backups of the computers in the system to allow quick rollback to a known configuation (e.g. fresh Windows, no software loaded).
I also recommend to feed back your experiences to your regional ABB sales representative.
