If the server computer can run Windows 2012 Server and the client computer can run Windows 8.1 you should be able to install 800xA version 6 on them.
ABB has a web page where certified hardware is listed:
Even if you do not find your choice of hardware there, 800xA version 6 should be able to run if you get Server 2012 and Windows 8.1 running.
Memory? 8 GB RAM per computer, or more.
Disk? The faster the better... SSD is recommended in clients. For servers we recommend some RAID controller with write cache enabled. SAS (SCSI) is often preferred over SATA. RPM (disk spinning speed) has an impact on performance; for optimum performance, select high RPM disk over a low RPM disk.
CPU? Servers can do with an average CPU, but in operator clients you really want to have as many GHz as you can possibly afford.
The 800xA Virtualization User's Guide contains more help regarding the options you have if you would like to run virtual servers. Document number: 3BSE056141-600.
Depending on the size of system; you may be able to run all servers in two VMware ESXi hosts (one primary and one secondary). These hosts should be equipped with at least two virtual CPU cores per virtual server. Some servers of 800xA benefit from having more than 2 CPU cores. More info in the above manual...
Virtual or thin clients are indeed possible, but for performance we do recommend traditional "thick" clients with top-of-the-line CPU speed (many GHz, not cores). In practice, thin clients will always run an operator workplace slower than a thick client.
