Workaround
Restart the Advant Station
Before the Advant Station has been running 248 days since last restart, the Advant Station should be restarted in a controlled way.
Press System Config - Station... - Station Restart
How to check when the Advant Station was restarted
You can check how long the Advant Station has been up and running in a log file containing a number of rows showing every restart of the Advant Station.
1. Start a terminal window (press System Config - Station... - Terminal Window).
A terminal window will start.
2. Give the following command in the terminal window:
$ vuepad /products/log/startup.log
A text editor will start.
Example how a start-up log may look:
.
.
.
Starting OS: 15 Jun 2001 Fri 08:45 Function Restart
Starting OS: 14 Jan 2002 Mon 14:22 Station Restart
The last line in the log will show when the Advant Station was restarted last time.
Compare that with the actual time and calculate how long the Advant Station has been up and running since last restart.
3. Exit the text editor (choose Close in the File menu).
Reporting the problem to an ABB Support Center
We have not been able to force an Advant Station to restart by this 248 days reason.
We are interested to get all information we can from customers who have had this restart. What we need is a core dump from a such a restart to analyse.
Please follow the instructions below to search for core dumps before you contact an ABB Support Center.
Start a terminal window (press System Config - Station... - Terminal Window).
A terminal window will start.
To search for core dumps execute the following commands in a Terminal Window:
$ su
Password: vm-guld (if you haven’t changed the root password)
# find / -name core -exec ll {} \;
Core files are now listed with time stamps as they appear on the file system. If any core file have a time stamp close to when the station restarted itself you should check which process that created the core file, by executing the following command:
# file
The output from the file command looks like this:
core file from '
When you have the above information contact Support Center for further instructions.
We also like to inspect the /products/log/dcSystem.log.old file (if it's active) after the station has restarted itself. If you suspect your system to suffer from the 248 days problem, make a copy of the dcSystem.log.old file to a safe place as soon as you have discovered the problem (or else it will be overwritten at the next restart). The log file may contain traces of events that lead to the restart.
To make a backup of the dcSystem.log.old file, execute this command:
$ cp /products/log/dcSystem.log.old /products/log/dcSystem.log.backup

"AdvaCommand for UNIX versions 1.7 and 1.8 - Restart after 248 days" resolves the following:
- There is a potential risk that the Advant Station restarts by itself after 248 days (8,2 months).
ABB and Hewlett Packard have been investigating this with high priority for a while. During these investigations we had found one problem that may cause a restart. We had good reasons to draw the conclusion that we had solved the 248 days problem, and we announced this. Further investigations and feedback from customers have given the result that the problem we solved was not the 248 days problem, but another problem with similar result - an Advant Station restart.
The problem we have solved is now described as X-server crash.
We continue to investigate the 248 days problem with high priority. To manage to solve the problem we need help from customers who have had a 248 days restart. See "Reporting the problem to an ABB Support Center".
Until we have found the whole reason what causes the risk for restart, we recommend to do a controlled restart after less than 248 days. See Workaround.
