3 General
The hard copy printer in MV810/830 is physically connected to a connector on TESSELATOR 7805,7815 or 7855.
The hard copy printer in MV850 is physically connected to a connector on TESSELATOR 8110/8310/8410. That is why the rest of this report only describes what has to be done in the TESSELATOR and the hard copy printer.
In MV820 the software for MasterView and TESSELATOR are integrated together and located in the same rack using the same CPU. In MasterView 820 it is only possible to use Facit 4542/4544 as a hard copy printer. The software in MV820 can not be updated to use any other printer as a hard copy printer.
Black and white or colour hard copy printouts can be produced depending on the ribbon mounted in the printer and colour conversion table selected in the TESSELATOR.
4 Available hard copy protocols
The TESSELATOR provides two different protocols for the hard copy printer, FACIT and Epson. The selection of protocol is made with a menu in the TESSELATOR itself.
- Standard
(FACIT 4542/4544)
- Alternative
Epson printers or other printers emulating the Epson protocol (e.g. Mannesmann Tally 230/9, DSEP 4111 and Mannesmann Tally 151/9, EP530/EP531)
The protocol used for the alternative hard copy is a subset of the Epson protocol.
5 Software releases in TESSELATOR
TESSELATOR 7805/7815/7855
The FACIT protocol was made available in TESSELATOR 7805/7815/7855 in software release C. The alternative Epson protocol was added in release D. In MV810/830 only release D is used. This means that those systems provide both protocols.
TESSELATOR 8110/8310/8410
The FACIT protocol is available in all TESSELATOR 8110/8310/8410 software releases. The alternative Epson protocol was added in release G (used in MV850/1). In TESSELATOR the software release is showed on the version display. To get the version display, use the following key sequence on the display building keyboard:
- depress keys FG V E R
Use the following key sequence on the operator keyboard:
- depress keys Shift+CF A 0 V E R
6 Selecting hard copy protocol
It is possible to choose between the standard hard copy protocol for the Facit 4542/44 printer and the alternative Epson protocol. See chapter 5, Software releases in TESSELATOR.
For the alternative hard copy, it is possible to select one of two different paper formats for the printout, A4 portrait and B4 landscape (reduced A3). The selection is made by way of the menu function ’W=Hard Copy Select’ in the TESSELATOR. With this menu function it is possible to select both hard copy type and color conversion table for the printout.
The TESSELATOR menu can be entered in the following ways:
- depressing SHIFT and Menu keys simultaneously on the display building keyboard.
- depressing the CF key and then the B and D keys after each other on the operators keyboard.
A menu will then appear at the bottom of the screen. By depressing the N key it is possible to step through the top level menu.
The selection made with the function ’Hard Copy Select’ can be made permanent with the menu function ’M=Make Permanent’. This makes the selections available even after another power up of the TESSELATOR.
7 The alternative hard copy protocol
7.1 Control code sequences
The control codes is this chapter are printed in hexadecimal notation.
The following control code sequences are used:
<0C> Feed paper to beginning of next sheet
<1B 55 01> Setting of one print direction
<1B 6C 08> Setting left margin to the eighth character
<1B 33 18> Setting of height step to 24/216 inch used with line feed in graphics mode
<1B 72 04> Color setting to yellow
<1B 4C 05 A0> 1440 bytes of graphic data
<0D> Carriage return
<0A> Line feed
The control codes for selecting magenta, cyan and black colors are used when required.
<1B 72 00> Color setting to black
<1B 72 01> Color setting to magenta
<1B 72 02> Color setting to cyan
7.2 Control code description
The protocol for the alternative hard copy printer in the TESSELATOR uses the control codes described below. No other control codes are used.
7.2.1 Form Feed
Form feed is obtained with the control sequence:
<0C>
The TESSELATOR expects that the paper for printouts is fed forward to the top of the next page as determined by the page length set locally in the printer. "Top of form" is set when the printer is switched on.
7.2.2 Print Direction
The print direction is set with the control sequence:
<1B 55 01>
TESSELATOR expects that the printer prints in one direction only, from left margin to the right.
7.2.3 Left Margin
The left margin is set with the control sequence:
<1B 6C 08>
TESSELATOR expects that the position for the left margin is set at 8 character columns from the physical left margin. This is done to permit the filing of printouts in loose-leaf binders without damaging the printout.
7.2.4 Setting of Step Height
The height of the step is set with the control sequence:
<1B 33 18>
TESSELATOR expects that the step-height, in graphic mode, is set at 24/216 inches. The control sequence for line-feed in graphic mode feeds the paper in accordance with the setting of the step-height. Note that this step-height also applies to any text sent to the hard copy unit.
7.2.5 Line Feed
After a carriage return line feed is performed with the control sequence:
<0A>
TESSELATOR expects that the paper is advanced one line by a distance set at 24/216 inches for printouts in the graphic mode. The line feed in the text mode must be set by the operator to, for example, 1/6 inch.
7.2.6 Carriage Return
The carriage is returned with the control sequence:
<0D>
TESSELATOR expects that data supplied is printed and that after the printout, the printing head returns to the left margin.
7.2.7 Graphic Dot Density
The graphic dot density and the number of DATA bytes to be printed as graphic pin columns are set with the control sequence:
<1B 4C n1 n2>
d = number of pin columns
n1 = d MOD 256 (e.g. A0)
n2 = INT (d/256) (e.g. 05)
TESSELATOR calculates n1 and n2 for each graphic sequence of DATA bytes sent to the printer for printout in the graphic mode. If 1440 pin columns are to be printed, data as follows is transmitted.
<1B 4C A0 05> <.......1440. DATA bytes.....>
7.2.8 Color Selection
The color is selected with the control sequence:
<1B 72 n>
TESSELATOR expects that the value of n determines the color of the printout which follows this sequence. The following color number table shows the values of n which are used.
n

00
01
02
04

8 Interface between TESSELATOR and printer
The hard copy interface in TESSELATOR systems is a serial RS-232C line. The communication parameters in the TESSELATOR and in the hard copy printer must be set to the same values.
For TESSELATOR 8110/8310/8410, the communication parameters for the hard copy function is set in the TESSELATOR menu.
For entering the TESSELATOR menu, see chapter 6, Selecting hard copy protocol. After entering the menu, select function ’A=Affect Parameters’.
Recommended hard copy communication parameters:
Baud Rate: 9600 Bd
Data Bits: 8 bits (must be 8 bits)
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1 bit
For TESSELATOR 7805/7815,7855, the hard copy communication parameters are set by the system itself and can not be changed by the user. The communication parameters set by the system are:
Baud Rate: 9600 Bd
Data Bits: 8 bits
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1 bit
9 Cable between TESSELATOR and printer
9.1 Ready/Busy signalling
Most printers does not have a receiving buffer that can store all data for a hard copy printout. Because of this, there has to be some handshaking between TESSELATOR and the printer. When the printer buffer becomes full, the printer must signal to TESSELATOR that it can not receive more data. If so, TESSELATOR stops to transmit data and then waits until the printer signals that it can receive more data again.
The handshaking between TESSELATOR and the hard copy printer is done by READY/BUSY signalling. One core in the cable is used for this purpose.
9.2 Standard cables to use
9.2.1 Cable for FACIT 4542/4544
The FACIT 4542/4544, DSEP 4542/4544, hard copy printer is connected with a standard cable as below:
Cable:
2639 0632-AA 7,5 meters
2639 0632-AB 15 meters
9.2.2 Cable for Mannesmann Tally 230/9 and 151/9
The Mannesmann Tally 230/9, DSEP 4111, and Mannesmann Tally 151/9, EP530/EP531 hard copy printers are delivered with a 5 meter cable that should be connected as below:
Cable:
Delivered with the printer, 5 meters
9.2.3 Extension cable for DSEP 4111, EP530/EP531
The cable between Mannesmann Tally 230/9, DSEP 4111, or Mannesmann Tally 151/9, EP530/EP531 hard copy printers and the TESSELATOR can be extended with a 10 meter extension cable, DSTK 193, 2639 0645-X, 10 meters.
Note! If this extension cable is connected to a TESSELATOR 7805,7815 or 7855 it has to be modified as described below.
If this extension cable is connected to a TESSELATOR 7805,7815 or 7855 system, then cut the wire between pin 4 and 5 in connector X1.
9.3 Cable for FACIT 4542/4544

On the Mannesmann Tally 230/9, Mannesmann Tally 151/9, Facit B3150 and Facit C6510 printers the READY/BUSY pin is pin 19.
On Microline printers it usually is pin 11.
To find out on which pin the READY/BUSY signal comes out of the printer, check with the printer manual provided by the manufacturer of your specific printer!
10 Which printers can be used?
If the standard protocol is selected, then the FACIT 4542/4544 printer must be used. See reference 1 for connection of a FACIT 4542/4544 printer.
Using the alternative protocol, there are several printers that emulate the Epson protocol that can be used, e.g. Epson EX-1000, Facit C6510,
Mannesmann Tally 230/9 (DSEP 4111) or
Mannesmann Tally 151/9 (EP530/EP531).

12 Problems with printing?
The most important internal parameter setups in the printer are the communication parameters, see chapter 8, Interface.
Another important internal parameter in the printer is the selected emulation mode. If alternative hard copy is selected in the TESSELATOR menu, then the printer has to be set in Epson emulation mode. Other setups inside the printer are not that critical.
Problem descriptions and what to do:
1. The printer does not print anything at all.
- Check that the communication parameters in TESSELATOR and the printer are the same.
- Check that pin 2 and 3 in the cable are connected in the right way.
- Check that the READY/BUSY signal is connected to the right pins at the printer end and at the TESSELATOR end.
2. Printout starts ok and then goes wrong.
If the printout starts ok with the right information on a couple of lines and then do strange things like feeding paper or prints rubbish, the READY/BUSY wire in the cable is connected to the wrong pin on the printer. Check the cable. See chapter 9, Cable.
3. The printer prints rubbish.
Check the following:
- the wrong protocol might be selected in the TESSELATOR. Check with TESSELATOR menu.
- the printer is not set in Epson emulation mode. Check setups in printer.
- It could also be something wrong with the settings of the communication parameters in TESSELATOR or the printer.
