Practical Peripherals MODEM on HP-UX 9.05
A description of this resolution:
- How to install a Practical Peripherals MODEM on HP-UX 9.05
The following procedure is used to connect a Practical Peripherals MODEM to an HP workstation running HP-UX 9.05.
Need a standard 25-to-9 serial cable
The modem is added initially using SAM.
- login to the station as root
Terminals and Modems->
Actions-> Add Modem
choose the proper interface card (1 or 2) and keep the default settings
speed (baud rate) 9600
Use Device for Calling Out (selected)
Receive In-coming Calls (selected)
note: these instructions assume that the first interface card is selected
Connect the cable to the serial port of the station and the MODEM itself. Plug the phone
line into the MODEM and turn the MODEM on.
S.1) Verify that the device drivers have been created
ls -l /dev/ttyd* /dev/cu*
/dev/ttyd0X c 1 0x20Y000
/dev/cul0X c 1 0x20Y001
/dev/cua0X c 1 0x20Y001
where X is the number assigned by SAM as to the device listing in SAM. Y is the serial
port number, 4 is for port "A" and 5 is for port "B".
/dev/ttyd00 c 1 0x204000
/dev/cul00 c 1 0x204001
/dev/cua00 c 1 0x204001
S.2) Verify that the getty is running on the port and it is in a pending
ps -ef | grep ttyd0
a root 272 1 0 08:23:42 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -h ttyd00 9600
There should be "?" in the tty field to show it is pending. If getty is not in a pending state,
the hardware should be checked.
If the getty is not running (or doesn't look like the one above), you'll have to edit the
"/etc/inittab" file and check for the getty process command in there. The /etc/inittab
should look like one of these:
ZZ:234:respawn:/etc/getty -h ttyd0X nnnn
ZZ:234:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -h ttyd0X nnnn
where ZZ is a 2 character id and nnnn is the baud rate. When in doubt, make the line look
like the following:
a0:234:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -h ttyd00 9600
S.3) Configure the station for call-out usage
The station needs to be configured for call-out usage to be able to set the parameters on the
To configure the station for call out usage, the file "/usr/lib/uucp/Devices" must have the
ACU cul0x cua0x 9600 hayes
Direct cul0x cua0x 9600 direct
ACU ttyd0x cua0x 9600 direct
where x is the port number.
ACU cul00 cua00 9600 hayes
Direct cul00 cua00 9600 direct
ACU ttyd00 cua00 9600 direct
S.4) Restart the Station
A /etc/shutdown -r 0 should be used to restart the station. Remember to be
logged in as root.
After the station has been restarted, verify the following:
Use ps -ef | grep ttyd0 to check that the getty is running. There should be a "?"
in the tty field. If the getty has a port number in the tty field, then the modem has carrier
detect (CD) strapped high and it should be changed. See section 3.2 of these notes or
220.127.116.11 Setting up the modem on the Advant Station in the Product Administration manual
for more details.
S.5) MODEM Configuration
The MODEM should be configured with the following strings:
open an hp term window
cu -s9600 -lcul0x dir
where x is the port number
AT &F &C1 &D2 S0=1 S36=1 &K0 &Q0 &W0 [return]
If the modem that was added is a US Robotics Sportster, please refer to the US Robotics
Modem Settings document about the at commands that should be executed.
