2GB 'CF' Compact Flash cards are getting difficult to obtain. What are the acceptable/available 2Mg CF cards today?
The 2GB Compact Flash cards (CF) are getting difficult to obtain. Tthe manufacturers are no longer making this size. However, the 2GB is the maximum size allowed in several of the AC800M controllers.
What is the ABB recommendation for both the short and long term? What does ABB suggest as certified replacements?Symptoms:
Requirements for Compact Flash (CF) and Secure Digital (SD) cards for use in AC 800M
ABB does not certify any particular brands. All available cards should be OK given that the card fulfills these requirements:
> Minimum Read speed: 8Mb/sec
> Minimum Write speed: 8Mb/sec
> Same or better 'ambient tepmerature' as the PB8xx controller the memory is to be used with; Commercial grade 0-70 C operating Compact Flash (CF):
AC 800M can use any byte-size version of the CF style memory card. Given that before version 5.1, the card is formatted according to FAT16. Since version 5.1, FAT32 is supported except for the loading of firmware which still requires FAT16. So, it is not a matter of the actual byte-size of the CF card. It is about the used file system of the partition on the card. Cards up to 2GB are formatted as FAT16 when purchased, Cards larger than 2GB will have FAT32. The user can quite easily change a FAT32 card to FAT16. Use a partition handling software, like the old FDISK. Remove the FAT32 partition, create a new 2GB partition, and then format it according to FAT16.
Note 1: This is only required before version 5.1. From 5.1 FAT32 is also supported
Note 2: A CF card used for upgrading controller firmware must still be FAT16. Control Builder has, from version 5.1 on, a menu entry that automatically reformats a FAT32 card to a FAT16 format with the firmware files on it.
Secure Digital (SD) SD cards are only used in the PM891 controller. The text above regarding CF is also valid for SD. For SD there is also another consideration. The protocol used for SD cards larger than 2GB is not the same as for 2GB. Larger SD cards are called SDHC and use different protocol. The PM891 controller currently does not support SDHC. Support for SDHC will be added in SV5.1 Feature Pack 3. Feature Pack 3 is currently targeted as a Fall 2012 release. Since SD and SDHC are not compatible, ABB expects the SD card to be manufactured in parallel with SDHC for a quite some time.
