Having once worked on an 800xA system that was infected with a particularly nasty rootkit, I can assure you that this would be an exceptionally BAD IDEA.
Hello,
I also went through this process recently and can give you the benefit of my experience.
The current ABB documentation will advise you that the following McAfee software has been tested and approved for use:
McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0 w/ Patch 4
McAfee ePO 4.6.6 (ABB document 9ARD107543-005_H)
However, be aware that the information from ABB regarding the versions of McAfee software is not always timely. McAfee has announced the "end-of-life" for ePO 4.6.6 as of December 2015. After a few inquiries to different people at ABB I learned that ePO 5.1 is okay to use and has been used by ABB for some time. I wish their documentation would reflect this.
ePO is optional, but I would highly recommend it. It greatly simplifies the management of the McAfee VSE and .DAT files to all of the 800xA nodes. Otherwise you have to handle the installation and maintenance on a "node-by-node" basis.
ABB strongly recommends a separate node be used as the ePO policy machine.
I followed the ABB installation and configuration documents and found them to be very helpful. I also took advantage of the ABB VirusScan policies that are available from SolutionsBank. However, be aware that some of the software and policies for 32 bit vs. 64 bit operating systems might (will) be different.
I did not encounter any upsets or performance issues during installation and I am not aware of any since the installation.
I hope this information helps you.
Best Regards.
