virtualization benefits
Hi, does it make sense to virtualize server and clients of an old system to get rid of old hardware supply problem? i need your experiment in virtualization. will it cause unknown errors after virtualization ? sombody recently told me it's recommended to avoid virtualization .
we have industrial it v5.0.1 and 1o2 redundant seystem including 2 As ,2CS ,2DS and 8 clients. using 8 redundant 864A controllers. using win server 2003.

Hi. The main issue is not to virtualise or not. The benefits might seem obvious. However 800xA 5.0 was released at a time where the use of Virtualisation was not widespread (ie in DCS/Industrial systems) and therefore these system were never envisaged to be virtualised. This then is the problem: you could probably Virtualise the system you have, however ANY problems that come up will not be un-supported by ABB, as this setup was never tested. If you wish to risk this, with your plant, that is entirely your prerogative. But without proper support, you may run into blind alleys that are not resolvable except by your good self. This is why it is recommended to not virtualise.
Other factors you should consider: Virtual environments are another level of complexity above the normal PC/Windows/Domain/Network knowledge base; other factors come into play (access, security and cyber), changes in the virtual environment (versions, patches etc), unsupported virtual features (eg vMotion...).
I hope this helps the why and to make your decision.
