AspenTech IP21/OSISoft PI instead of 800xA History
We want to use AspenTech IP21 or OSISoft PI instead of the 800xA History for data historization and analysis.
Is it possible to visualize the historical trends in the 800xA Trend Display aspect even when there are no 800xA History logs configured?
Is there a manual where this is described in detail?
Best regards,
Cristobal

Disclaimer: I've worked extensively with OSI PI.
Nobody ever got fired for buying OSI PI. Theres a reason why its the biggest in the market. Their support is excellent and puts other companies to shame.
Even with a third party historian, you still need Basic History. This is included in the base 800xA system anyway, so you are not buying anything extra. You do not require History 2.0 or IMS or PGIM or any of the variants of extended history storage. Yes - you need Basic History Logs. No, you don't need History 2.0 or IMS.
Basic history does 2 things ....
Yes - third Party Historians can be the Data Source for 800xA trends. However, there is no official released "solution" from ABB to integrate PI with 800xA. So you will need to spend a few days in PG2 graphics builder figuring out how to build trend displays from the PG2 graphic primitives and an HDA history source. I know of at least one customer who has done this and uses PI as their DCS trend data source on a reasonably large site. You can also open web based trend displays generated by PI on the DCS consoles.
There is typically a very clear line between the people who use PI in your company and the plant Operators. While a full integration of PI into your DCS sounds nice, in practice most customers don't need it and can continue to use Basic History for all of their DCS trending.
Sorry, unsurprisingly, there's no single manual from ABB about how to do all of this. But everything you need is available somewhere in the Manuals. OSI PI's documentation is also pretty good.

- Basic History is the Data Source for OSI PI. Do *NOT* use an OPC-DA connection to PI - Use an OPC-HDA History interface. This interface can then easily set a rule of "If its in Basic History, then its in PI". Whenever the PI interface is restarted, then Basic History can back-fill the missing data. If the link fails on Friday Night, you can recover all of the missing data on Monday Morning. No need for redundant interfaces. PI shares the same logging as basic history, and there is no additional communications load imposed on the controllers. This is VERY important if you are using an older DCS like AC400 series or MOD300. Insist on this interface from OSI-Soft as they may not be familiar with it and the sales guy will probably suggest OPC-DA to you.
- Basic History is the Data Source for the 800xA Trend Displays. Basic History is quite capable of holding months worth of all your data and will still drive all of your DCS trend displays. It is way less trouble doing this than trying to remove history entirely from your DCS.
