A typical problem is degraded electrolytic capacitors. This is not restricted to motherboards, power supplies are also a common user of capacitors to rectify an alternating current.
A bad PSU can cause excessive wear on downstream capacitors and premature failure. In Advant Controller 400, we recommend perriodic replacement of PSUs every 10 years, IIRC.
