Failure of Console Power Supply (CPS01) stopped ICT and NIS21
We have console power supply (Model: CPS01, Make: Abb bailey beijing engineering) part#4NIC-Q191 installed for powering up NIS21 and ICT13A (for interface with server station). CPS01 contains two built-in power supplies which do load sharing. Recently, one of our power supplies failed and corresponding NIS21 and ICT13A stopped. As a result, communication was lost with all four servers and clients. We reset both modules (ICT and NIS) successfully. We checked voltage on output of faulty power supply and they were 0. Further, fault LED was on. We replaced the faulty power supply. As per my understanding, after one supply became faulty, second one did not perform the load sharing quick enough and as a result, both modules lost power briefly. Would welcome any support from experts to answer the following: - Are two power supplies of CPS01 (4NIC-Q191) designed for bumpless transfer? - If they are designed for bumpless transfer, why did the NIS21 and ICT13A got stopped?

Hi Ahmad,
I'm not familiar with the CPS01 power supply so can't comment on it's performance. However as a general comment, 2N power systems depend in part on the ability of the remaining power supply to absorb or provide energy in response to the failure of the partner supply. The failed power supply may have caused an under or over voltage condition that the remaining power supply could not ride through. The picture indicated the +5V supply had failed so the impact on the power system at the time of failure would be unpredictable. This is compared to a loss of the AC supply to a power module, which is probably the more predictable and common failure mode.
Is the power system and DC earthing OK and as per the site planning manual? The power supply fault may have affected the 0V level of the DC power system and affected expander bus communications.
With regards to the failure, from the error codes it appears that the expander bus communications between the modules failed. Which module failed first is difficult to determine as the NIS code is normal for a halted master module.
Error codes
NIS - Expander bus failure (00011111)
ICT - NIS not responding (01001000)
Does the power system have a bus monitor module and PFI configured? If so, the failure was not due to the +5V going low as this would have put the modules into reset (LEDs 11111111) at some stage.
Have you tested the fail over by cycling the power to one of the power modules?
With the benefit of hindsight maybe each ICI should have it's own pair of redundant power supplies, which would prevent a similar failure from halting both ICI's.

Many thanks for your comments. We checked the fail over of supplies during plant standby and it was successful and bumpless. ICT and NIS kept on running. You are right, best thing would be that each ICT is fed by redundant power supplies. I have not been able to trace datasheet either. ABB is also not able to trace it, despite the fact that it has ABB logo on it.
