Communication between AC450 and S7-400
Hello Rob,
I would like to know the best way to connect a AC450 to a S7-400. I have some options, the first option is through a CI532, that way I would use the 3964 protocol.
My second option would be a CI534V02 through Modbus, but I would like to know if it's possible to make the AC450 slave instead of master. And my third and last option is using CI541 through Profibus. Is it possible to communicate an AC450 to a S7-400 through Modbus TCP? Are any of those options that I listed above applicable? Is there a better way to make this communication?
Thanks in advance!

- The 3964 protocol is quite old. It works very well on the AC450 but I do not know if it is easily supported on newer S7 PLCs
- Yes, the AC450 can be a modbus slave
- My personal experience of Profibus on AC450 is not good. On older firmware, the profibus card is unreliable and must be restarted occasionally. Other contributors on this site say that the latest firmware releases of both the AC450 CPU and also the CI card together make the profibus interface more reliable. So if you want to use profibus you *MUST* have the latest firmware releases.
- The AC450 does not support modbus TCP. So you need a Modbus RTU to TCP Gateway. We have good experience using "Moxa" convertors.
For the AC450 both Modbus Serial and Siemens 3964 protocols work equally well and are quite similar to configure. Personally I would choose Modbus because it is simple, well understood by everybody and finding debugging tools and information via Google is very simple.

We have made connection between Siemens S7-300 CP342-5 (slave) and AC450 with Profibus CI541V1 (master) as per answer below. S7-400 connection should be similar.
