The opposite may work during upgrade and the so called "coexistence" period.

Yes. The opposite way is working.But I'd like to know if it works for this way. Because the HMI is not ready for upgrade.
I have no proven evidence of it being totally impossible for a person with knowledge in how the OPC server accesses the controller and what input it needs to be able go online with an application and provide OPC data for.
However, what you are asking for is not part of the intended functionality and hence falls outside product scope, support which may void warranties.
