We are currently replacing part of an older Freelance 2000 system with a pair of AC900F controllers for redundancy with S800 I/O on Profibus.
Our system has 7 pairs of redundant controllers in 4 plant areas. 2 pairs of DCP10's have been replaced with AC800F controllers using the CAN fieldbus card to continue using the older Rack I/O along with newer S800 I/O.
As I have been informed by ABB, a CAN fieldbus card will be forthcoming for the AC900F controller that would allow you to keep the older Rack I/O and get the newest controllers. This will require a software upgrade to Freelance 2015 or newer.
kpierson is correct. In Q4 this year we will deliver a CAN communication interface (CI910) for AC 900F. So you could replace the DCP10s with AC 900F then. AC 900F will run your application from the DCP10 with no (or minor) changes, and the I/O configuration of the rack I/O can also be kept. There is also a price wise very attractive Lite version of AC 900F comming up at the same time, but the Lite is limited to 400 I/O, so maybe you better stay with the AC 900F Standard.
If you are looking to replace your I/O, you can go with S700, S800 or S950e. While S700 is a very compact PLC type I/O, S800 and S950e are DCS I/O supporting Hot-Plug. S950e will also come out this year and is the new essential bulk I/O for Freelance.
For all the new goodies you will need to upgrade your system to Freelance 2015. But be aware that Freelance 2015 runs on Win7 only, so you might need to update your PC's operating system or even replace the PC hardware.
Have a look at Sentinel for Freelance, which for a reasonable yearly price allows you to always get the newest Freelance software version. This way the necessary upgrades can be budgeted and you will not find yourself out of money if an unforeseen upgrade is necessary.
