How to extend the Thick Ethernet MB300 to UTP
We have customers running an extended MB300 network on thick ethernet. (the famous yellow Coax cable).
The customer wants to install an 800xA system which can be connected to this coax cable by re-using the tranceivers where the AS500OS has been connected.
But for safety/ abailability we want to place the redundant CS/AS in a different location and we need to extend the MB300 with Glasfiber.
This used to be possible with Hirschmann switches, but they seem to be not available anymore.
We have told the customer to upgrade the MB300 Network to UTP , and then the issue will be solved easily, but replacing the whole MB300 yellow cable is no option now.
So how to proceed?
you should use Mini-UTD from the 15 pin to TP, which takes you to the 800xA system which normally has switches with TP connection.
I don't know the distance to your 800xA system from the old network, if it is far away you need switches using fiber between the networks.
A Hirschmann Starcoupler with an OYDE-S fiber optic module could be used to act as a bridge between 10Base5 (Thicknet) and 10BaseF (optic fiber) which in turn there exist many 10BaseF to 10BaseT (Twisted pair) converters.
Check EBay for used units!
Personally I carry a Digital Equipment Hub with an AUI connector which I use when I need to tap (listen) to a Thicknet.
Also Netgear had such (even if I do not rate them as high as Hirschmann and Digital Equipment).
