The ABB AC 800M PLC only speak MMS.
Regular operator stations in System 800xA does not speak MMS. Engineering stations speak MMS when programming the PLC.
In System 800xA with AC 800M PLCs, an AC 800M OPC server is typically put between the PLC and HMI, which runs on separate networks connected by a router node.
The philosophy is that as few nodes as possible should be able to route traffic to the PLC.
Besides manual routing, automatic routing can be implemented with RNRP. Any computer running the ABB RNRP service can act as router. ABB also offer a dedicated RNRP Router, NE870 and NE871 with further security enhancements like firewall, traffic filters, storm control, etc.
