Layer 3 switching allowed for 800xA Version 6.x?
Im quit sure, its not allowed, but does any ABB Guy have a official Statement?
I'm not sure but I think you are mixing different issues.
Layer 3 switches, has several capabilities to routing, virtual networks (VLAN), prioritize traffic, and so on.
The 800xA network topology need to segment the Control Network (PLC / Servers Network) of the Operational Network (Client workstation / Servers Network).
This separation of networks can be done with several Layer 1 switches not connected betwwen them. Or Layer 3 switches that virtualize the networks and allow connection with rules between the switches.
With the virtualization of the servers in EsXi, you add a virtual switch that tag the communication with the correct VLAN before to send or receive from the physical switch and allow manage several virtual network through the same physical cable.
For example, this could be my "physical" network:
And over the same physical components, manage several virtual connections:
We could manage the VLAN 1 (in red) only with some devices and without special requirements:
And manage the VLAN 2 (in green) with other devices and redundant requirements:
