How to use Diagram Types in Function Designer
In a previous project I have used Function Designer for most of the programming and I like a lot of the features. However, I really need to create types as I have several identical systems. Therefore I want be able to make changes to the type and not to each instance.
For that purpose I am investigating the possibility of using the new Diagram Editor (in the Control Builder). There I can make Diagram Types which can be instantiated.
I would like to use these diagrams (kind of like Control Modules) as blocks inside Function Designer so I can connect them in there and compile a new read-only Diagram.
I have added a Function aspect to my Diagram Type but when I insert it into Function Designer I cannot see the Parameter inputs and outputs (ports).
I also get compilation errors. So my question is:
- Is it possible to use Diagram Types within the Function Designer environment?

I have never built Diagram Types, so I cannot help with your original question. However, I have created and used several Control Module Types built by Function Designer. Have you already evaluated that option? If you have not, I would recommend checking out the "3BDS100968-510_C_en_System_800xA_Engineering_5.1_Engineering_Studio_Function_D
esigner_Getting_Started.pdf" document, Section 3, Configuring User-defined Object Types.
It is not very straight-forward, but if you follow the steps described, you can see for yourself. To me, the best part is being able to create Signal Group Object Types. I used this feature to create signal types looking like CBM-DIS, consisting of multiple signals. This way you can assign one single signal object with many I/Os to a profibus slave instead of using the standard signal objects for each individual signal from/to the slave.
I suppose you are using 800xA SV5.1 FP4.
In this version you can not create a diagram type and use it in Function designer. This support is available from SV 6.0 ONLY. You can however use a diagram type in CBM diagram editor which is almost like a Function designer (much easy too).
But if you still need to use diagram types in function designer, there is a TC available for FP4. So please contact ABB supportline for more information on this.
